SELF – SAMPLING INSTRUCTION
The collection of DNA samples for testing is simple. With the latest technology of LOCI, you are not too strict in matters of sampling. You can choose the following forms and suit yourself to bring loci tested.
NOTE:
- Pieces of blood, nails, hair root or any other samples only show a result, there is not this sample more accurate than that one.
- When doing DNA testing, you must not abstain from food or drink medications.
COMMON SAMPLES FOR DNA TESTING
Blood samples:
- With blood samples, you can take at your home.
Step 1:
- Prepare a clean envelope to contain sample, write clear name, age, or symbols onto envelope. (use paper envelope, not use nylon one)
- Prepare a clean swab (be careful not to touch head of swabs that will wet blood)
Step 2:
- Use tools take 1 or 2 drops of blood and saturate cotton of swab, and then dry naturally for 5 minutes. Next, you score envelope that was written names of people need do DNA testing and seal envelope.
- For each DNA testing, you repeat the steps above, note to avoid confusion between the samples.
- Put all envelopes that contained samples into larger envelope, write clear name, and then bring to LOCI to do DNA testing. If your home is too far, you can send by post to LOCI Centre. You remember to record your phone number on the envelope. When we receive forms, we will inform you and conduct to do DNA testing.
NOTE:
- With the patients that have frequent blood transfusion, please call to LOCI Centre to be consulted closely.
- Preserving sample time: The samples can be stored for several months or longer under normal conditions.
Oral Mucosa sample
Applying for samples collected at home
Step 1:
- Prepare a clean envelope to contain sample, write clear name, age, or symbols onto envelope. (use paper envelope, not use nylon one)
- Prepare 2 clean swabs and cut a head of cotton swab. (be careful not to touch head of swabs)
- The people who need to collect sample must rinse their mouth with water 2 times.
Step2:
- Use a head of cotton swab to wipe into your cheek gently about 20 times. For each cheek, you use one swab, and then dry naturally for 5 minutes. Next, you score envelope that was written names of people need do DNA testing and seal envelope.
- For each DNA testing, you repeat the steps above, note to avoid confusion between the samples.
- Put all envelopes that contained samples into larger envelope, write clear name, and then bring to LOCI to do DNA testing. If your home is too far, you can send by post to LOCI Centre. You remember to record your phone number on the envelope. When we receive forms, we will inform you and conduct to do DNA testing.
NOTE:
- Avoid drinking coffee, milk, and tea before sampling (if the people who need to collect sample drank them, they must rinse their mouth for 5 times to clean).
- For children, you avoid sampling after being breast-fed. If your baby was breast-fed, you must give baby to drink 20ml of water to rinse the oral cavity.
- Preserving sample time: The samples can be stored for several months or longer under normal conditions.
CONVENIENT SAMPLES FOR DNA TESTING
Fingernail and toenail samples
Step 1:
- Prepare a clean envelope to contain sample, write clear name, age, or symbols onto envelope. (use paper envelope, not use nylon one)
- Wash your hands thoroughly before sampling.
Step 2:
- Use clippers or scissors to cut fingernails and toenails that have weight about 1 grain of rice (maybe one piece or several pieces). Next, you score envelope that was written names of people need do DNA testing and seal envelope.
- For each DNA testing, you repeat the steps above, note to avoid confusion between the samples.
- Put all envelopes that contained samples into larger envelope, write clear name, and then bring to LOCI to do DNA testing. If your home is too far, you can send by post to LOCI Centre. You remember to record your phone number on the envelope. When we receive forms, we will inform you and conduct to do DNA testing.

Hair, fur and beard samples
Step 1:
- Prepare a clean envelope to contain sample, write clear name, age, or symbols onto envelope.
Step 2:
- Use tweezers or any items to pull out about 5 – 7 hair (beard) that have roots. Next, you score envelope that was written names of people need do DNA testing and seal envelope.
- For each DNA testing, you repeat the steps above, note to avoid confusion between the samples.
- Put all envelopes that contained samples into larger envelope, write clear name, and then bring to LOCI to do DNA testing. If your home is too far, you can send by post to LOCI Centre. You remember to record your phone number on the envelope. When we receive forms, we will inform you and conduct to do DNA testing.
NOTE:
- Not collect hair samples for children under 8 – month – ago because of no hair roots.
- Preserving sample time: The samples can be stored for several months or longer under normal conditions.
- With no root hair samples, please refer to special samples.
Umbilical Cord Sample
Step 1:
- Prepare a clean envelope to contain sample, write clear name, age, or symbols onto envelope.
Step 2:
- Use scissors to cut about 1cm fresh or dried umbilical cord. Next, you score envelope that was written names of people need do DNA testing and seal envelope.
- For each DNA testing, you repeat the steps above, note to avoid confusion between the samples.
- Put all envelopes that contained samples into larger envelope, write clear name, and then bring to LOCI to do DNA testing. If your home is too far, you can send by post to LOCI Centre. You remember to record your phone number on the envelope. When we receive forms, we will inform you and conduct to do DNA testing.
NOTE:
- Preserving sample time: The dried umbilical cord samples can be stored for several months or longer under normal conditions.
- With fresh umbilical cord, please dry in the sun or dry with hairdryer but not to be too hot.
Special samples
Urine, milk teeth, hair without root, sperm, toothbrushes, gum, condoms, blood stains on the fabric, nose mucus on the blotting – paper, and cigarette butts have sampling steps as following:
Step 1:
- Prepare a clean envelope to contain sample, write clear name, age, or symbols onto envelope.
Step 2: How to obtain
- Sperm, condom: saturate a clean cotton swab.
- Hair no roots: grab 10 highest wires
- Toothbrush: toothbrush gets used 2-3 times.
- Chewing gum, blotting papers, and cigarette butts: get cleaned clamp to grip them into the envelope.
- Blood or sperm stains on cloth or fabric: Using scissors cut your fabric containing it into the envelope.
